KEEP IT FRESH.

The last thing dad wants to do after a long day of work is give a lecture on the dangers of underage drinking. Discussing alcohol doesn’t have to feel like a chore, but it is important. As a parent, you have the opportunity to get to know your kids better, squash out rumors, and be a source of healthy information. They need your help understanding how to handle situations they might find themselves in, like underage drinking.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, a 2018 study showed that over 95% of 12–14-year-olds who reported that they drank alcohol in the past month, got it for free, often from their home or family members, the last time they drank. The research highlights that Kids are less likely to drink if their parents have clear rules against drinking at a young age, and if they provide a good example by drinking responsibly themselves. 1

Are your rules about drinking underage clear? Do your kids know what you expect and why? This is a great time to share that with them. And remember, if you don’t want the conversation to feel like a lecture, then start off by listening.
